Srinagar: Baisakhi normally marks the reopening of Mughal gardens on the bank of Dal Lake in Kashmir Valley. However, due to threat of novel coronavirus, the Baisakhi festivities remained a mute affair amid lockdown over the coronavirus in the Valley.
Reports said that Mughal gardens, including Nishat, Shalimar and Cheshmashahi were also not reopened formally for the public in view of the threat due to the dreaded disease.
Lieutenant Governor, Girish Chandra Murmu while greeting the people on the auspicious occasion of Baisakhi had appealed to the people to adhere to the social distancing norms and avoid any public gathering in view of the current situation.
In his message of felicitations, he observed that this day, which marks the beginning of New Year in the Indian Calendar, has a special significance for the people of Northern India. Baisakhi also marks the commencement of the harvesting season, when farmers reap the fruit of their hard work, he added.
The Lt Governor observed that the celebration of this festival symbolizes the spirit of our glorious pluralistic traditions and the custom of observing Baisakhi with harmony and mutual brotherhood adds colour to its festivity.
