Fresh rains lash Kashmir, MeT forecast ‘erratic weather in next 3 days; ‘monsoon likely to be delayed by 1 week’

Srinagar: Fresh rains lashed most parts of Kashmir Valley on Sunday even as the local meteorological department forecast “erratic weather” for next three days.
Director of the meteorological Sonam Lotus said that it’s currently raining in Kupwara, Baramulla, Sopore, Srinagar, Gulmarg, Ganderbal and at few places of south Kashmir while weather is mainly clear in Jammu region and partly cloudy in Ladakh.
“Rain will spread to whole Kashmir valley and Poonch, Rajouri, Banihal Ramban-Banihal,Doda,during next 3-4 hours,” he said, adding there would be a decrease thereafter. “Overall, weather likely to remain erratic for next 2 to 3 days with no forecast of continuous heavy rain or shower,” he said.
Regarding Monsoon, he said, normally it hits J&K in the 1st week of July but It is likely to be delayed by a week as its onset over Kerala was delayed. “Rainfall from June 1 till now is deficit in most districts of Jammu and above normal in Kashmir and Ladakh,” he added.
Meanwhile, according to a meteorological department official, this summer capital of the state received 5.1mm of rain till 0830 hours on Sunday. Qazigund, the gateway town of Valley had 0.8mm of rain during the time, Pahalgam had 2.8mm, Kupwara 1mm while Gulmarg, the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district had highest rainfall with 9.8mm.
