Workshop on ‘Vetting & Editing of Kashmiri Translated Texts’ begins at KU

Srinagar:  A six-day workshop on “Vetting & Editing the Kashmiri Translated Texts” commenced at University of Kashmir (KU) on Thursday.

The workshop is organised by the Department of Linguistics, University of Kashmir in collaboration with National Translation Mission, Central Institute of Indian Languages Mysuru.

Inaugurating the workshop Vice Chancellor, KU Prof Talat Ahmad said “It is very important that our children should be able to understand our own mother language besides learning other languages. I hope this six-day workshop is going to be very useful for all the participants as well as for the society.”

In his presidential remarks Prof.Talat also expressed his excitement over the performance of University in recent NAAC visit. “I congratulate University teachers, students, scholars and non-teaching staff for the recent results in NAAC visit. This is a proud moment for all of us. However we do not have to be complacent. We have to work hard till next NAAC visit so that university can be seen among top universities of the country.”

Dr Nisar A Mir, Registrar KU who was guest of honour on the occasion said “Language is an important component in defining any culture or society. I hope Kashmiri language would be taken at primary school level so that the translated books or texts can be read & can benefit us.”

While responding to the demand of establishing a language lab in the Department of Linguistics KU, he said “I assure you that University administration will be available in any sort of financial support in establishing a language lab for the department.”

The workshop was attended by scholars, students, faculty and former heads of different departments.
Welcoming all the participants Prof.Aijaz Ahmad, Head Department of Linguistics said “Interestingly J&K is home to various languages & dialects it’s the responsibility of our department to conduct research on these languages.”
A journal titled Interdisciplinary Journal of Linguistics (IJL) was also released on the occasion.
