Zojilla pass: Snow clearance operation commences on Sonmarg-Kargil road

Srinagar: Snow clearance at Zojjila pass over strategic Kargil-Sonamarg road commenced on Friday under project VIJAYAK.

Officials said that a team of 40 officials and officers, with 4 Dozer, 2 Snow Cutters, 1 Wheel Loader and one JCB supported by dedicated team of Mechanical and Medical experts have been put in service.

The Work was officially inaugurated by the Chief Engineer of Project Vijayak of Border Roads Organization, Brigadier AS Sohal and was accompanied by Commander 762 BRTF, Col Rajeev Lohani, SDM Drass, SHO Drass and other Officers.

Brigadier Sohal said that his team has started the Snow Clearance Work from Drass in advance in the first week of March.

“We have reached KM 116 and we are just 8 km away from Zero Point. Despite heavy snowfall this year, if the weather condition remains remain conducive the road will open by 25th of April,” he said.

“Keeping apprehension of slides and avalanches in consideration, additional machinery have been stationed at every 5 to 6 kms,” Brigadier said.
