8 policemen among 11 persons go missing in south Kashmir avalanches

Srinagar: Eight policemen were among eleven persons who have gone missing after snow avalanches struck a post at Jawahar Tunnel and a house in Kokernag area of south Kashmir on Thursday evening.
Reports said a massive snow avalanche hit the police post at Jawahar Tunnel in Kulgam district and eight cops and two civilians were buried under it.
A senior police officer that 20 persons, 18 of them policemen were present at the police post when avalanche struck it. “Ten persons, 8 of them policemen are believed to be trapped under the avalanche police post at Jawahar tunnel while as many are safe,” he said
Sources said among trapped include two persons are from fire and emergency department, as many are policemen who handle crime cases, two civilians (accused in some case) and four other are policeman.
Meanwhile, one person was killed while two others were rescued and one more is still trapped after an avalanche struck Sunbradi area of Kokernag in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Thursday evening.
Reports said that the avalanche hit residential house of Bashir Ahmad Qureshi son of Noor Mohammad Qureshi at Sunbradi, resulting in on the spot death of a person whose body was recovered while as two more persons were rescued by the local volunteers and police.
According to reports, one person is still trapped under the snow and efforts are on to retrieve him.
The deceased has been identified as Bashir Ahmad.
Elsewhere, rooftop of a mosque was damaged after it collapsed due to snowfall at Khamoh, Rafiabad in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
The official further said that one boat ‘Meenar’ of Mushtaq Raga son of Mohammad Sultan was also damaged after it collapsed at Chinar Bagh in Dalgate, Srinagar.
The official said that at Heewan area of Boniyar, Baramulla, one house of Wahab Najar also got damaged after it collapsed due to snowfall. A cowshed of Haleema Begium at Khas Dajan Boniyar also collapsed and suffered damage, he said.
