Srinagar: Pulwama district of south Kashmir recorded abysmal voter turnout of 1.4% while Kupwara district saw highest 53.6% polling in the final of the 9-phased elections in Kashmir Valley on Tuesday.
The polling begun at 8 a.m. and ended at 2 p.m. Pulwama saw voter turnout of 1.4%, Ganderbal 20.9%, Anantnag 24.8%, Budgam 38.8%, Baramulla 38.9%, Bandipora 46.0% and 53.6% in Kupwara. “Overall, 38.8% voted in the final phase,” election officials told INS.
According to the Chief Electoral Officer Jammu and Kashmir, 430 candidates were in the fray for 55 sarpanch and 138 panch seats, while 68 sarpanches and 433 panch have been elected unopposed for this phase. 68745 electorates were eligible for voting for sarpanch constituencies whereas it was 20688 for panch constituencies. In this phase, 452 polling stations were set up of which 346 were categorised as hypersensitive.
