Baramulla: A 55-year-old woman was killed and dozens of residential houses were damaged after torrential rains along with heavy hailstorm and gusty winds hit many areas in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district, resulting in damage to crops and fruit orchards on Tuesday afternoon.
A police official told INS that a lady was killed after a mighty poplar tree fell on her at Kachwa Muqam in Wagoora of district Baramulla.
The deceased lady has been identified as Hajira Begum wife of Ghulam Rasool Mir, a resident of Kachwa Muqam.
Locals said the woman was planting paddy saplings in the nearby fields when gusty winds uprooted a poplar tree which fell on her.
She was immediately rushed to SDH Kreeri for immediate treatment. Later on, she was referred to SMHS Hospital where she succumbed.
Earlier, torrential rains and gusty winds wreaked havoc in parts of Baramulla district, smashing window panes of several residential houses and damaging rooftops in the area. The electricity service in many parts of the district was cut immediately after the windstorm.
Reports from Sheeri said that a residential house was fully damaged in Fatehgarh village when a poplar tree fell on it. In another incident, rooftop of a masjid in AzadGunj Baramulla got damaged due to gusty winds.
Locals said that heavy hailstorm caused severe damage to orchards and crops in Sopore, Baramulla, Pattan, Rafiabad, Kreeri, Wagoora, Chandoosa, Zainageer, Narvaw and other adjacent areas, causing huge losses to the farmers.
