Pulwama firing: Civilian driver killed, brother missing; soldier succumbs

Pulwama: A civilian sumo driver was killed and his brother is missing at Kakpora area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama. While officials said that civilian driver was caught in firing and his brother, who is missing, the locals claim that army opened indiscriminate fire following a militant attack that led to the killing of a soldier at Kakapora area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district late Sunday evening.
The civilian driver has been identified as Bilal Ahmad Ganie son of Mohammad Ramzan of Narwa Kakpora was killed when he was returning home along with his brother Mehraj, a teenager. The brothers had gone at a poultry farm which they were running in a partnership in a nearby area.
The incident occurred after militants opened fire upon army’s 50 RR camp at Kakapora, leading to the grave injuries to one of its soldiers. The injured soldier was shifted to hospital where he succumbed to injuries, officials said. The army fired back. Meanwhile, massive protests erupted in the area with protesters claiming that civilian was killed fifteen minutes after the attack. “They should also reveal whereabouts of the missing youth,” the protesters said.
“In a cowardly and provocative act of terror, terrorists carried out a stand-off attack on Kakapora Army Camp. One soldier martyred. Retaliatory actions ongoing,” reads a statement issued by the army.
Police said that militants indiscriminately fired at army camp, resulting into serious injury to one soldier of army and a civilian.
“Consequently both the Jawan (soldier) and the civilian succumbed to their injuries. It is learnt that taking advantage of the darkness militants managed to escape,” police said, adding, “Police has registered a case in this matter and investigation has been initiated”.
