Nehama, Kulgam shuts against ‘forces high-handedness’, demand removal of Army camp

Kulgam, May 26: Nehama village of south Kashmir’s Kulgam observed a complete shutdown on Saturday against the vandalizing of property, arrests, and thrashing of inmates allegedly by the army on Friday.

Residents of Nehama Kulgam alleged that the Army troopers posted in the locality went “berserk” after grenade attack took place and army then came into population and ransacked property, broke windowpanes, damaged vehicles and shops and beat up the inmates without any provocation.

Protesting villagers are demanding that the army camp should be removed from there so that people could have a sigh of relief.

“The camp is only creating problems for us. They came and beat up people, damage public property. they better leave the area,” protesting villagers said.

To protest against the “forces highhandedness” shopkeepers didn’t open their shops in Nehama on Saturday morning and traffic also remained off the roads. People also hit the streets and blocked the main road for several hours. Protesters raised pro-freedom slogans and sought action against the forces personnel involved in harassing the locals.
