Baramulla: After mounting civilian casualties in border areas of Jammu, armies of India and Pakistan resorted to mortar shelling and firing along Line of Control in north Kashmir Baramulla district’s Uri area, officials and locals said on Thursday.
Locals of Kamlakoot village of Uri said that there was shelling and firing in the area around 11p.m., forcing them to take refuge in safer areas. “We heard shelling from both sides which continued till 2 a.m.,” a local resident said, adding, “we took shelter in relative safer areas within the Village.” In February this year, many areas in Uri were affected and a few civilians lost life.
An army officer said that at least seven army posts and a village was targeted by Pakistan and “adequate” response was given to it. There were no immediate reports about any casualties on either side of the line dividing two parts of Kashmir.
A number of civilian on either side of the divide were killed in last few days alone in Jammu. On Wednesday, at least five civilians were killed and more than fifty others were injured. More than one lakh people have fled the areas and as per them, the situation in the region was ‘war-like’.
