Shopian: Forces lift cordon, militants escape; Two houses damaged

Srinagar: A joint cordon by the Army, paramilitary CRPF and Special Operations Group (SOG) of Police has been lifted from Turkiwangam village of Shopian district, sources said on Thursday. At least two houses and a few cowsheds were damaged in action by the joint team even as militants, believed to have been trapped in the area, have managed to escape, they said. The siege around the village was lifted around 2 a.m. after thorough searches. Soon after the siege was laid on Wednesday afternoon, hundreds of people, mainly youth, marched towards the area in a bid to rescue militants and clashed with government forces. The later allegedly fired bullets, pellets and teargas into the protesters, resulting into killing of a youth while at least two dozen others suffered injuries, a few of them with bullets.
The deceased, Omar Kumar (17) son of Mohammad Abdullah Kumar of Pinjoora village of Shopian had a bullet injury in chest and was declared dead on arrival at district hospital Shopian, sources said.
The officials at the hospital said a few youth with pellet injuries were being treated while several others with pellet and three with bullet injuries were brought to Sub-District Hospital, Zainapora. The youth with bullet wounds were referred to Srinagar hospitals for specialized treatment, they said.  The situation in the area remains on the edge. the authorities have snapped internet.    (picture for illustration)
