We’re without wages for months, say MGNREGA workers in Shopian

Shopian: The workers under MGNREGA in Chitragam village of this south Kashmir district allege that they are without wages for months.
They accuse the RDD Block Chitragam of playing delaying tactics with them saying they are not being paid for last many months.
Under the flagship scheme MGNREGA, 100 days of unskilled job is guaranteed to job card holders and the wages as per the guidelines of MGNREGA are to be made within the fortnight (15 days).
“We have suffered a lot for the last 6 months as no wages have been paid to us. Whenever we ask the officials about the payment, they say the department has not issued funds,” the workers told INS.
“To work for months altogether without being paid a single penny is a grave injustice with us. Most of us have families and almost all of us have fallen in debt,” they complained.
The workers have urged the authorities to look into the matter and disburse their wages at the earliest.
When contacted, the block development officer (BDO) Chitragam said, “We don’t have such kind of liabilities in our block, we are disbursing the payments through eFMS which only takes 2-3 days in wage disbursement. Still, I will look into the matter.”
