Srinagar: Expressing serious concern over the frequent imposition of curfew and restrictions in downtown Srinagar and caging entire population of the area without any proper justification, Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said the move amounts to violation of basic democratic principles.
“Just after a single incident anywhere in Jammu and Kashmir, government wastes no time in imposing curbs in downtown and confining people in their homes without worrying for the basic rights of people living in downtown, Srinagar,” a spokesman said.
Taking a dig at the ruling dispensation, the spokesman said that beyond imposition of toughest curbs in downtown, the government has developed a habit of placing the amalgam’s chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house detention.
He said it was only after 13 days of continuous house confinement that Mirwaiz was allowed to address the Friday gathering at the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar was yet again placed under house detention on returning home. “This reflects the autocratic mindset of those at the helm.”
