Barmulla: Two militants including a “Pakistani” who were killed in a road accident in north Kashmir’s Sopore on Monday were laid to rest on Tuesday late evening.
Two persons were killed in a road mishap in Sopore on Monday morning. They were taken to hospital but succumbed to injuries. Police identified them as militants, one of them a foreigner.
SSP Sopore Harmeet Singh Mehta said one of the killed persons is a local from Brath Kalan Sopore namely Owais Ahmad Mir son of Bashir Mir.
Police couldn’t identify another militant who they believe is a Pakistani.
Reports said as police handed over the body of Owais to his family for last rites, hundreds of people assembled outside his house and chanted pro-freedom and pro-Pakistani slogans.
The body was laid to rest at their ancestral graveyard in Sopore.
Sources said the body of the “Pakistani” militant was also laid to rest at Sheeri, Baramulla in north Kashmir, after postmortem.
“Police with the help of some locals buried him,” sources said, adding that the foreign “militant” was not identified.
Meanwhile, reports reaching INS said that militants offered gun salute to Owais during funeral and paid tribute to him.
They said a group of masked militants late Tuesday evening appeared at Brath village of Sopore town and fired several rounds in air to pay tribute to slain Owais Ahmed Mir.
Soon after militants offered gun salute, the whole area was sealed by government forces.
A senior police official told INS that they received information about few gunshots fired in the village. “We are investigating it,” he said.
