SMHS hospital attack: Another cop succumbs

Srinagar: Second policeman who was injured in the militant attack at SMHS hospital on Tuesday has succumbed to his injuries.
He has been identified as Babar Ahmad, resident of Bradi Aangan, Shangas in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Earlier in the day, a policeman was killed in firing by a militant at SMHS hospital, Srinagar during which a prisoner, a Lashkar-e-Toyiba commander Naveed Jatt, escaped.
Police party has accompanied Naveed to the hospital from Central Jail Srinagar for a medical check-up.
Police later issued an alert after the militant escaped. There are conflicting reports about the shoot.
While some reports suggest that Jat escaped with the help of two other militants who were waiting for him to arrive in the hospital, others suggest that Naved snatched rifle of one of the policemen escorting him and opened indiscriminate fire.
A police officer said that the matter was being investigated but the militant did not decamp with the rifle. “The escorting police personnel in the hospital were fired upon by unknown (militants) resulting in injuries to two police personnel who later on succumbed to their injuries,” a police spokesman said. Naveed Jat managed to escape and a manhunt to nab the militants has been launched, the spokesman added.
