Srinagar: The State Human Rights Commission has sought a report from Director Health Services Jammu after a poor couple had to carry their body of the newborn in cardboard carton as they were allegedly denied an ambulance by a government hospital in Udhampur district of the Jammu.
Member of the Commission Jung Bhadhur Singh Jamwal took Suo Moto cognizance of a news telecasted on a T.V. channel that a lady from Chenani gave birth to a baby in District Hospital Udhampur who expired immediately after the birth.
The parents of the baby, who belonged to a poor background, were not in a position to hire a private vehicle to carry the dead baby to their home. The parents begged before the hospital authorities for providing ambulance for the purpose but were refused it, the news highlighted.
“The parents were forced by the compelling situation to carry the baby packed in a ‘card board’, thus a grave disrespect was shown to the dead body. Prima-facie a case of grave violation of human rights is made out,” the commission said and “viewed the callous attitude of the hospital authorities seriously” and directed the Director Health Services, Jammu, Chief Medical Officer Udhamur, Medical Superintendent District Hospital Udhampur and SSP Udampur to file the report in the matter on or before March 6.
