Cold wave unabated in Kashmir

Srinagar: The mercury in summer capital of the state and most other parts of the Kashmir Valley remained below normal for this time of the year, weatherman said on Wednesday.
An official of the local meteorological department said that Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.6 degrees Celsius, up from minus 4.9 degrees Celsius the previous night.
The night temperature in Qazigund in south Kashmir settled at a low of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius against yesterday’s minus 5.2 degrees Celsius.
The neighbouring Kokernag town saw mercury rose slightly to settle at a low of minus 0.8 degrees Celsius last night against minus 1.8 degrees Celsius 24 hours ago, the official said.
He said Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 3.7 degrees Celsius up from minus 5.4 degrees Celsius the previous night.
The official said the night temperature in Pahalgam— the famous health resort— increased from a low of minus 6.6 degrees Celsius the previous night to settle at a low of minus 3.8 degrees Celsius last night.
Gulmarg – the famous ski-resort in north Kashmir – recorded the minimum temperature of minus 4.0 degrees Celsius up from minus 6.0 degrees Celsius yesterday.
The mercury in Leh town settled at a low of minus 13.0 degrees Celsius against minus 14.4 degrees Celsius last night, an official of the meteorological department said.
The weatherman has forecast another week of dry conditions, saying that freezing temperatures would see no let-up over the period.
