Srinagar: The mercury continues to hover below normal during ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’, a 40-day harshest period of winter that started from December 21 in Kashmir Valley.
A meteorological department official told INS that Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of -4.3C slightly up from -4.6C – the summer capital of the state had experienced on previous night. The normal temperature for this time of the year is around minus 2C, the official said.
The night temperature in Qazigund, the gate way town in south Kashmir, settled at a low of -4.4C as against -5.0C on night before.
In the neighbouring Kokernag town, the mercury increased marginally to -1.7C, the official said.
He said Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded a low of -4.7C.
The official said the night temperature in Pahalgam settle at -4.8C against -6.1C on previous night.
Gulmarg—the world famous ski-resort in north Kashmir—recorded a minimum temperature of -5.0C against -4.5C.
At minus -15.2C, Leh town was the coldest in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday
Kashmir is passing through ‘Chillai-Kalan’ and it ends on January 30, but the cold wave continues even after that in the Valley during a 20-day long ‘Chillai Khurd’ and a 10-day-long ‘Chilla Bachha’.
The Met office said the weather is likely to remain dry for next 24-hours.
