Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Personal Law Board (JKMPLB) on Sunday passed a resolution, opposing the extension of proposed central law restricting ‘triple talak’ in the state.
The resolution was passed during an executive council of JKMPLB chaired by Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Bashir-ud-Din Ahmad Farooqi, at its head office here.
All the members endorsed the resolution and pledged to oppose any law aimed at interfering religious matters of Muslims and “diluting the special status” of the state.
“Since this is a Muslim majority state, we will not allow government of India to extend any such laws to Jammu and Kashmir. No direct or indirect interference in religious matters of Muslims will be tolerated. JKMPLB is apolitical religious body whose aim is to safeguard religious rights of the people,” said Mufti Bshir-ud-Din in his inaugural address.
He said government of India wants to dilute the special status of Jammu and Kashmir which “is the base of temporary agreement with India.”
He said Muslim Personal Law Board will hold meetings and conduct seminars in all districts of the state to create awareness among people about “nefarious designs” of the government of India.
“We will not allow government of India to interfere in our religious matters; we will mobilize people to make them aware about the wicked plans of India. Our foremost preference will be teachings of the holy prophet (SAW) hence meddling in any form will be fought tooth and nail,” he added.
The meeting was attended by members of civil society, former judges, doctors, journalists and lawyers.
