Srinagar, Dec 20: Normal life in Kashmir was severally affected in Kashmir Valley on Wednesday due to official restrictions and shutdown being observed against the recent civilian killings.
The call for the shutdown was given by joint resistance leadership (JRL), asserting that Kashmiris will never remain silent on “genocide.”
Shops and business establishments remain closed while skeletal private transport was seen plying on roads.
Authorities have also imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar areas within the jurisdiction of seven police stations— Rainawari, Nowhatta, Khaniyar, MaharajGunj, SafaKadal, Maisuma and Kralkhud.
Barbed wires were placed in many areas to prevent the movement of people.
On Tuesday, a woman (24) Beauty Jan was killed allegedly by government forces’ firing even as police blamed it as “cross firing”.
Earlier, another woman, Misra Bano and Asif Iqbal (a cab driver) were killed in Kupwara last week in firing by government forces. The police attributed the killing to “cross firing” and “mistaken identity” respectively.
“Kashmir has been turned into a killing field where the lives of men, women and even children are not safe,” the JRL comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik had said in a statement, asking people to observe strike. “The brutal killings of Misra Bano and Asif Iqbal of Kupwara, Ruby (Beauty) Jan of Shopian clearly show that Indian army, occupational forces and police are here only to kill Kashmiris and pro-India politicians are deployed to provide legal shield to these killers.”
Meanwhile, chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Geelani remained under house arrest while Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was detained at his Nigeen residence on Tuesday evening.
