Srinagar: Massive clashes erupted amid a shutdown in several areas of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Tuesday where three LeT militants were killed during last night gunfight with government forces.

Eyewitnesses and reports said that clashes erupted near the site of gunfight in Nusu Badragund and Bonigam villages in Qazigund area against the militant killings. They said government forces resorted to massive tear-gas shelling to disperse the protesters, who in return pelted the forces with stones. Clashes were also reported from Vesu and Devsar areas besides other adjoining villages.

An eye witness said that the traffic on Srinagar-Jammu highway was affected due to the clashes near Qazigund. Officials said the traffic has been diverted to Verinag-Anantnag highway. The authorities have already suspended the train and Internet services in twin districts of Anantnag and Kulgam. Earlier multiple funerals were offered for slain LeT militant Yawar Bashir at his native Hablish village in Kulgam district.

Yawar was killed in a gunfight that erupted after militants attacked an Army patrol on the Jammu-Srinagar highway in Bounigam area of Qazigund yesterday. Two LeT militants, identified as Furqan and Maviya, were also killed in the gunfight.
