Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday termed the 27th October as the most unfortunate day for the people in the recent history of Kashmir.
“When people of Kashmir were observing the day as a black day, the government again turned to its traditional approach of curbing the dissent by imposing curfew and strict restrictions on the movement of the people,” a spokesman of the Hurriyat said.
He also condemned placing Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house confinement to bar him for performing social, political and religious activities and prevent him from offering the obligatory Friday prayers.
The spokesman said because of the restrictions for the fifth consecutive week no Friday prayers could be offered in Kashmir’s grand mosque Jama Masjid.
He termed the action of the authorities as vindictive and said that these actions by the authorities amount to the direct interference in religious affairs of the people and these means of oppression are used under a well-planned policy to crush the resolve of people besides choking the economy of downtown Srinagar to “punish the people for their unflinching support to the movement.”
He said the dictatorial attitude adopted by the state government was aimed to weaken the popular political sentiment of the people of Kashmir and strongly condemned the Government for resorting to frequent imposition of curfews in downtown and caging a huge population in their homes.
The spokesman said the Kashmir stands as an internationally accepted dispute, and the people of Kashmir are struggling for their basic right of self determination from past seven decades. “The implementation of UN resolution or a meaningful dialogue between India, Pakistan and the People of Kashmir is the only way forward to resolve this issue.”
