ASI among six cops injured in Army action in Ganderbal

Srinagar: At least six cops including an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) sustained injuries on late Friday evening when Army personnel in civvies thrashed them for allegedly stopping their vehicle at a check-post in Gund area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
Sources said that that some army personnel of 24 RR in civvies were travelling in private vehicles were coming back after Yatra. “Army troopers were stopped at a routine naka in Gund late night and without any provocation, the army men in civvies got down from the vehicles and roughed up the policemen on duty,” they said.
They said that the Army troopers from the nearby camp reached the police station Gund and thrashed the other policemen there and also ransacked the police station as well.
Sources said that six policemen including a senior cop sustained injuries and were shifted to hospital for treatment.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Range, Munir Ahmad Khan told KNS that the matter was discussed with the higher ups of Army who have initiated Court of Inquiry in this regard.
“The Army officials have regretted the incident. Brigadier of the area has also spoken over the matter,” he said, adding that the police have taken cognizance of the incident as well while First Information Report (FIR) has also been registered.
Meanwhile, Defence spokesman, Rajesh Kalia said that a minor altercation took place yesterday night between some Army personnel returning from Amarnath Yatra in civil dress and JKP personnel at Gund.
“No major injuries were suffered in the incident and the matter has been resolved by personal intervention of senior officers. Measures to prevent recurrence have been taken,” he said. (KNS)
