Srinagar: The Valley transporters on Thursday observed strike against the government’s ‘imminent decision’ of shifting the General Bus Stand (GBS) Batamaloo to Parimpora.
The ‘chakka jam’ call was given by the Kashmir Transporters Welfare Association (KTWA) on Wednesday.
The strike has been called to protest against the government’s imminent move of shifting the GBS Batamaloo to Parimpora.
The public transport was thin on roads today while a few vehicles were seen ferrying the passengers today in the Commercial Hub Lal Chowk.
The transporters told KNS that the government has decided to shift the GBS Batamaloo to Parimpora, which would affect the transporters and the passengers alike. “We won’t allow the government to shift the GBS to Parimpora. We have been operating from the Batmaloo bus stand for decades. It is an ideal location for passengers coming to the city from all parts of Kashmir. But the government wants to shift it to Parimpora for unknown reasons. That is what we went on strike today,” they said.
The locals coming from North and South Kashmir said that the government move would add miseries to the passengers. “We believe that Batamaloo is an ideal location for bus stand as we don’t face any hardship to reach Srinagar or to catch a bus to return home,” the passengers from North Kashmir said, adding but the government is pushing them to face hardships by shifting the bus stand to Parimpora.
