Djibouti: The 18th edition of the regional competition of the holy Qur’an memorization, recitation and intonation, known as “Prize of the President of State”, will kick off Sunday in Djibouti.
This round of competition, which is organized by Djibouti’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Culture and Endowments each year during the holy month of Ramadan, gathers Qur’an memorizers from Somalia, Yemen, Sudan, Uganda, the Comoros, Kenya and Tanzania, in addition to participants from the host country.
The competition, initiated by President Ismail Omar Guelleh in 1999, aims at enhancing the sense of brotherhood and convergence among the peoples of East African region and the Red Sea basin, the ministry said.
It is noteworthy that President Guelleh personally honored the first place winners of the three categories of the contest namely, memorizing the whole text of Qur’an, 20 parts and 10 parts.
