Srinagar: The Kashmir valley Sunday observed shutdown on the commemoration of death anniversaries of pro-freedom leaders later Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone and Hawal massacre.
The shutdown was called by Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq as part of ‘Hafata Shohada’ week-long program to pay homage to Mirwaiz Moulana Muhammad Farooq, Abdul Gani Lone and the Hawal martyrs on their anniversaries.
The authorities had imposed restrictions in the police jurisdictions of Nowhatta, M.R.Gunj, Khanyar, Rainawari and Safa Kadal to prevent the rally of the Hurriyat scheduled at Eidgah.
As per KNS correspondent, shops, other business establishments remained closed in major towns of the valley. The movement of traffic was thin as less public and private transport moved on the roads.
Heavy deployment of police and paramilitary was seen on downtown and other areas to thwart the rally and protests.
Meanwhile, 13 youths have been picked up by police in Pulwama district during night raids in different places.
Police sources said that youth who have been detained are accused of stone pelting.
“13 youth belonging to Prichoo (8) Barpora (1), Wagum (3), Malikpora (1) were detained as they are chronic stone pelters and involved in stone pelting and disturbing peace in the town,” police said.
But families of the detained said that the youth have been detained by police of false charges. However, police officials refuted the allegations of the families.
