Srinagar, Feb 20: Police on Thursday said that it have arrested an extortionist who has thirty criminal cases already in Central Kashmir’s Srinagar district.

In a statement, he police said that it has arrested an accused person for his involvement in extortion case following a detailed investigation. The accused person had a history of over 30 criminal cases, and had previously been booked under the PSA twice.

According to police spokesman, a written complaint was received by Police Post Bagyas on 10th January 2025 wherein the applicant namely Tufail Ahmad Badar son of Mohammad Akbar resident of Badarpora Qoimoh Kulgam stated that he was at Shireen Bagh Super Speciality hospital with his patient. During the night hours, he went outside the hospital to buy medicines from nearby medical shop where he was forcefully taken into the vehicle by one unknown person who extorted ₹8,000/- from him.

Accordingly, police sakd that a case vide FIR No. 02/2025 under section 308(2) BNS was registered in Police Station Safakadal and investigation was started, he said.

During the course of investigation, the investigating team after analysing various CCTV cameras and other technical evidence identified the accused person as Imtiyaz Ahmad Shah @99 son of Ghulam Qadir Shah resident of Aikal Mir Khanyar and he was subsequently arrested, he said.

It is pertinent to mention here that the accused person is involved in more than 30 FIRs involving theft and extortion in addition to being booked under PSA twice, he said.

J&K Police is committed to eliminating social crimes from the society. Respectable citizens are requested to share information of anti-social elements with J&K Police in shaping better society & good future, reads the statement.
