Breast Cancer rapidly rising amongst women in urban areas: Expert

Srinagar, Oct 31: The Department of Bioresources University of Kashmir in collaboration with Indian Cancer Society on Sunday held an online workshop on Breast Cancer Awareness.

The theme of the programme was: “Breast Cancer Care: Screen for Early Detection, Treatment, Research and Education.”

More than 300 participants from across the country joined the workshop, organised as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month commemorated in October every year.

In his message on the occasion, KU Vice-Chancellor Prof Talat Ahmad urged that breast cancer awareness should reach the young generation so that they get educated about the risks factors, screening and early detection.

“We need to pool and share our resources, using the latest technologies for the diagnosis, treatment and awareness about breast cancer,” he said.

KU Registrar Dr Nisar Ahmad Mir inaugurated the workshop and discussed the emerging trends of cancers globally. He emphasised on awareness and early detection of breast cancer for its early treatment.

Dr Mir acknowledged the role of the Department of Bioresources in conducting workshops on emerging and important issues.

The Registrar emphasised the need to have a breast cancer screening-cum-detection centre at the University Health Centre and asked Dr Manzoor A Mir, Organising Secretary of the workshop, to work-out the modalities for the same.

Dr Manzoor Ahmad Mir, Coordinator, Department of Bioresources and organizing secretary of the webinar  gave an overall scenario of breast cancer and said that everyone must work together to create a ‘national strategy’ for awareness and early detection of breast cancer.

He welcomed the participants from various institutions across the country and highlighted the teaching and research activities of the Department of Bioresources.

Dr Shamima Wani, Assistant Professor and Head, Surgical Oncology, GMC Srinagar made an elaborate presentation on the overview and awareness about breast cancer. Dr Wani also elaborated upon the patients and patient-care related to Breast Cancer available in the tertiary-care centers of Kashmir.

Sunita Gupta, Joint Secretary, Indian Cancer Society New Delhi highlighted the role of the organisation towards raising awareness and prevention of Breast Cancer.

“Breast Cancer is rapidly rising amongst women in urban areas and it is one of the most common cancers in the country,” Gupta said.

Dr Shabnam Bashir, Senior Consultant (Breast Cancer) and an Alumni of Roswell Park Cancer Institute USA gave a detailed presentation on overall aspects of breast cancer. She talked extensively about preventive strategies, role of diet and lifestyle, signs, symptoms and risk factors related to Breast Cancer. She also answered queries of the participants.

The workshop concluded with a quiz wherein the qualifiers were awarded with certificates. Dr Bashir delivered a vote of thanks.
