Anantnag: Umer Shabir, 23, had no idea that he will be doing post mortem of bodies in coming years. He had joined the Medical College Anantnag as a Security Guard.

Umer hails from Bulbul Nowgam area in south kashmir’s Anantnag .

In 2014, Umer shabir joined in GMC Anantnag through HDF (Hospital Development fund) as security guard. After one year the then officials in GMC Anantnag had assigned him another job after the retirement of an employee, since then umer had performed at least 120 post mortems in GMC Anantnag.

His journey has seen him spend 7 years consistently helping the doctors in the lab in while they perform autopsy.

 

According to Umer he has performed post mortems on a staggering 120 bodies since his joining in the department way back in the year 2015.

 

“I have never faced a problem while working here. There have been many doctors and department heads I worked with, but I never faced any problem with anybody,” said Umer shabir.

 

” I dissect the body and pick out the organ as per the doctor’s instructions. Then the doctor writes the report after a thorough examination of the body,” he said.

 

He would be called, even during night hours from GMC Anantnag to do post mortems. Umer, a HDF employee is getting Rs 6000 salary form the GMC since he joined.

 

According to Umer he has done the first post mortem of a girl who has been poisoned in 2015, since then Umer has performed at least 120 post mortems in GMC Anantnag.

 

According to official guidelines, the eligibility for the autopsies must hold an MBBS degree from a recognized medical college. After MBBS, the candidate can go for MD with specialization in Pathology. B.Sc in Pathology followed by a Master’s degree can also help candidates to pursue a career as a Forensic Pathologist.

 

Umer hails from Bubul Nowgam area in Anantnag District requested several times to higher authorities to hike his salary but to no avail. According to him in year 2018 he left his job at GMC Anantnag after some days the then Principal GMC Anantnag Dr Showkat Jeelani and other officials requested him to continue his job and assures him to regularize his service in GMC Anantnag, He said.

 

Dr Syed Tariq Quraishi principal GMC Anantnag said that “I was unaware about the facts and I will look into it”.

” I joined in GMC Anantnag I had already passed directions and deputed some senior doctors in every department in GMC Anantnag, he said adding that the autopsy is the work of forensic expert.

“We are monitoring the work of the experts. It is wrong that a non medico will perform post mortem in GMC Anantnag,” he said.

 

Principal said that any wrongdoings happens in GMC Anantnag in privious years, we are going to change that all. He said.
