Scattered To Widespread Rain Forecast In Kashmir, Yellow Warning For Lightning Issued

Srinagar, May 1: Weatherman on Saturday forecast “scattered” and “fairly widespread” rain from 4 to May 7 and has issued “yellow warning” for isolated lightning and thundershowers with gusty winds in Jammu and Kashmir.
Till May 3, isolated light rain and thundershowers in Kashmir and Pirpanjal range of Jammu division towards late afternoon have been predicted. “There is possibility of scattered rain on May 4, fairly widespread rain on May 5 and 6 and scattered rain on May 7,” a MeT official said about the forecast for one week.
The weather department has also issued ‘yellow warning for “isolated lightning/ thundershowers with gusty wind 30- 40-kmph” for both Jammu and Kashmir divisions from May 1 to 5. There are four types of colour codes signifying the level of caution: green which means no action, yellow—situation to be watched), amber –government agencies need to be prepared for severe weather and red –action needed by the agencies.
The meteorological department official said that Srinagar recorded a low of 9.4°C against 11.4°C on the previous night. The temperature was 0.3°C below normal for this time of the season in the summer capital of J&K where 1.4mm of rain was recorded during last 24 hours till 0830 hours, he said.
Qazigund recorded a low of 7.3°C against previous night’s 8.2°C and it was below normal by 1.2°C in the gateway town of Kashmir, the official said.
Mercury settled at 3.8°C against 4.2°C on the previous night in Pahalgam. The temperature was below normal by 1.1°C during this time of the season in the famous tourist resort in South Kashmir which also received 0.1mm of rain during the time, he said.
Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a low of 6.2°C against normal of 8.4°C and last night’s 8.3°C, the official said. The area received 0.4mm of the rain during the time, he said.
Kupwara recorded a low of 6.3°C against 8.0°C on the previous night which was below normal by 2.1°C for this time of the season in north Kashmir district, the official said.
Gulmarg, the world famous skiing resort in Baramulla district of north Kashmir, recorded a low of 3.0°C against 6.0°C on the previous night, the official said. It was 1.3°C below normal in the resort which received 5.4mm of rain in the 24 hours, the official added.
