Srinagar: A gunfight broke out between militants and government forces in the southern Shopian district on Tuesday night.
Reports said that a joint team of army’s 55 RR, SOG and CRPF laid a siege at Melhora village. The forces have installed lights to prevent the escape of militants owing to darkness.
Quoting a police officer, a news agency said that the operation was launched following inputs about the presence of some militants.
The militants tried to break the cordon amid the exchange of fire. However, the joint team engaged the militants in the gunfight.
Sources said that two to three militants of Ansar Gazwatul Hind are believed to be trapped in the area.
Meanwhile, more reinforcement has been rushed to the area by the army, reports said.
