New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear on Tuesday a plea demanding restoration of 4G connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir amid covid-19 pandemic.
On April 10, the apex court had issued a notice, returnable within one week, to the Jammu and Kashmir administration and the centre to the public interest litigation filed by the Foundation for Media Professionals, challenging the government order of 26 March restricting internet speed to 2G in the J&K, on the grounds that such an order violates provisions of equality before law, freedom of speech and expression, right to life and liberty, and right of children to free and compulsory education, granted under Articles 14, 19, 21, and 21A of the Constitution.
The petition will be heard by an apex court bench comprising Justices N.V. Ramana, R. Subhash Reddy and B.R. Gavai at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, as per the cause list by the top court.
The petitioner contends that restricting internet speed is unreasonable, especially when there is a global pandemic and a nationwide lockdown imposed by the government. The 4G internet remains snapped in J&K since August 5.
