Srinagar: Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, at present detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA), was on Tuesday shifted to her residence which has now has been declared as a sub-jail, officials said.
The order to shift the PDP Chief, who was initially put under preventive custody on August 5 last year and later booked under the stringent PSA on February 6, was issued by Shaleen Kabra, Commissioner Secretary of J&K’s Home Department.
The order states that Mehbooba was being shifted from a “subsidiary jail” at Maulana Azad Road to “Fairview Gupkar Road” which is her official residence and order mentions it as “subsidiary jail”.
The order comes amid continuous demands for her release and after the release of NC leader and ex-Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. On February 6, the government had slapped the PSA against her and Omar, a day before their detention under procedural law was supposed to end. welcoming the shifting of Mehbooba Mufti from a makeshift jail to her residence, JK Apni Party (JKAP) on Tuesday demanded immediate release of all political leaders and activists who are still under preventive detention post August 5 last year in and outside J&K jails.
In a statement issued here, Rafi Ahmad Mir, a former PDP legislator and JKAP leader urged the government of India to take a purpose-oriented call on these unwarranted detentions and free all political detainees including Ms. Mufti who has now been confined to her home.
“While it is heartening that shifting of Ms. Mufti would provide some solace to her family, the situation demands that all political leaders and activists who continue to be under detention on mere suspicion should be freed in order to make the situation more conducive,” Mir observed.
The JKAP leader urged the government to revoke PSA and release Ms. Mufti and lift all forms of curbs on the political leaders and activists who are in different jails inside and outside J&K or restricted to their residences.
