Rains lash Jammu: Highway closed, Yatra suspended, schools in Udhampur closed

Jammu: Rains have been lashing Jammu areas since Tuesday and have triggered landslides, shooting stones incidents over the strategic highway, and in Udhampur district, administration has ordered closure of educational institutes as well.

An official told INS that Jammu-Srinagar highway has been closed due to landslide triggered by continuous rainfall at Morh Passi near Balli Nallah in Udhampur district.

“Traffic movement on National Highway-1C (Katra-Reasi-Pouni-Shivkhori) suspended, following landslides and shooting stones in the area,” he said.

Amarnath yatra has also suspended from Jammu.

“Due to landslides on new track, Vaisho Devi yatra diverted to tradational track. Helicopter services on Katra-Shanjichat sector remains suspended due to bad weather conditions,” officials added.

As per orders from Dr Piyush Singla, Deputy Commissioner Udhampur students of all the Highter secondaries, High School, Middle schools, and primary schools have been ordered closure for the day.

“The orders have been passed due to heavy rain and bad weather conditions. However,Teachers will attend the school,” order said.

It has been raining since last night in many parts of Jammu division including in Jammu, Udampur, Kathua, Samba.

Weather man said that rains are likely to continue, although with decreasing rainfall intensity, but likely to extend to other areas like Doda, Kistawar, Zanskar, Leh-Manali Highway(especially on Serchu-Manali Axis)Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, South & Central Kashmir, Shopian, Kulgam, Anantnag, Srinagar, Budgam etc. by Wednesday morning or forenoon .

The forecaster has warned that the continuous rains may lead to landslide, flash flood, flood like situation in vulnerable spots of Jammu region.

A minor has died and another is injured in house collapse incidents in the Udhampur district.
