KPC’s maiden election deferred following police action against senior journalist Ghulam Jeelani Qadri

Srinagar: The eight-member election commission of the Kashmir Press Club (KPC) on Tuesday said that they have cancelled the dates announced earlier for nominations, withdrawal and polling for the maiden election for the scribes body. The development comes in wake of the arrest of the senior journalist by police in a nocturnal raid.

The KPC statement issued here said that the chief returning officer Manzoor Anjum, met at Polo View to discuss the emerging situation in the wake of arrest of Urdu daily Afaaq editor Ghulam Jeelani Qadri.

“The commission considered the written petitions made by several bodies to defer the dates of nominations and reschedule the election,” statement said.

The statement said that the commission will meet again on June 29 and take a call on the future course of action.
