Shopian: Three militants were killed in a “brief” gunfight with government forces at Yarwan Keller in this south Kashmir district on Thursday.

Official sources told INS that based on “credible Input” about presence of militants in Yarwan, a hilly area, a joint team of army’s 23 Para and SOG launched cordon and search operation.

A police official said that as the government forces were strengthening the cordon, militants hiding in the area fired upon them, triggering an encounter which lasted for a very brief time.

Massive searches were launched in the area and reinforcements rushed towards the spot. “The searching party recovered two bodies initially and another one after some time,” the official said.

Sources said that there was a hideout in the area and there was no fresh firing in the area.  “the searches in the area are going on,” they added.
