Major landslide hits highway at Mankote, traffic halted, 1000 vehicles stranded

Jammu: Traffic on the Srinagar Jammu highway has been halted after a massive landslide  blocked the road at Mankote area and almost 1000 vehicles have been stranded since five hours.

According to SSP Highway Jitendra Singh a landslide of almost 300 meters in length has blocked the road and men and machinery has been put in place to clear the blockade.

The traffic remains halted for five hours now on the only road connectivity of Kashmir with the rest of the world. Highway was opened for one way traffic after remaining closed for three days.

“Landslide hit the road at mankote area between Banihal and Ramban. It has a length of 300 meters,” Singh told INS.

He said that more than 200 vehicles are stranded near the Chenani tunnel.

“900 to 1000 vehicles have been stranded due to the landslide and we are in communication with the administration to arrange facilities for the stranded persons,” Singh said.

He said that they will be arranging eatables and other essential items for the stranded passengers and are communicating with the district administration.

“The process to clear the debris is underway. Once the road is through we will allow vehicular movement over the stretch,” he said.
