Rains, snow lashes Kashmir, highway closed

Srinagar: Parts of Kashmir Valley received moderate to heavy snowfall even as rains lashed Srinagar and other areas amid rise in night temperatures, local meteorological department said on Monday. The Srinagar-Jammu highway has been closed amid snowfall at several places along the thoroughfare, a traffic department official said.
A MeT official said that Gulmarg, the world famous skiing resort, had 18 centimeters of fresh snow in 24-hours till 0830 hours while as it recorded a low of minus 4.0 degrees Celsius.
Pahalgam recorded 12 centimeters of fresh snow during the time and night temperature settled at 0.2 degree Celsius at the famous hill resort while Qazigund and Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a low of 0.6 degrees Celsius and minus 0.3 degrees Celsius respectively.
Reports from south Kashmir’s Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam districts said that rains lashed most places while higher reaches witness fresh snowfall.
Reports from north Kashmir said that most of the Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts are covered under fresh blanket of snow. There are reports about 3-4 inches of snowfall in Baramulla.
As per meteorological department, there was 15 centimeters of snowfall recorded in Kupwara in 24-hours and minimum temperature there settled at minus 2.9 degrees Celsius.
Reports about heavy snowfall has been received from Kangan, Gund, Kulan and Gagangeer areas of Central Kashmir Ganderbal district while rains lashed its other areas.
This summer capital of the state also witnessed 8mm of rainfall in 24-hours till 0830 hours and it was raining when this report was filed.
Meanwhile, a traffic department official told INS that Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only surface link connecting Kashmir with the rest of the world, has been closed amid snowfall at several places along the thoroughfare.
