“All three (militants) eliminated,” Director General of Police S P Vaid tweeted.

A police officer said army’s 55 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a joint cordon-and-search operation after inputs about the presence of militants at Chatpora village in main town Pulwama.

As the joint team advanced towards the suspected spot and fired some warning shots towards it, the militants hiding inside a house fired at forces, triggering off a firefight. During the course of the gunfight, the forces allegedly blasted the house and razed into rubble. All the three militants were killed. The identity of the slain militants is being ascertained, the officer said.

Soon after the news about the encounter spread, a large number of youth took to streets and tried to march towards the encounter site. However, the forces used tear smoke shells and fired few rounds and pellets to disperse them.
