Sopore: Clashes erupted between government forces and protesters in Sopore town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district after Friday prayers amid a complete shutdown on the fifth death anniversary of Muhammad Afzal Guru who was hanged and buried in Delhi’s Tihar Jail in 2013.
Witnesses said that clashes erupted after police fired tear gas to stop protesters who were attempting to march from Jamia Masjid area to main chowk of the town.
The protesters were initially stopped by government forces already deployed at the main chowk but amid pro-freedom slogans, several youth defied the restrictions which led to clashes.
The angry youth pelted stones on forces who retaliated with tear smoke shells.
No injuries were reported so far.
The clashes continued when this report was filed.
