World Heritage Week begins with showcasing of 700-year-old books in Srinagar

SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 20: Department of Libraries and Research today inaugurated the World Heritage Week from 19th to 25th November at Gani Memorial Reading Centre Rajouri Kadal.

On the occasion, the libraries department showcased the rarest of the rare books.

Some of the showcased books in Sanskrit, Persian and Kashmir languages are around 700-year-old.

On the occasion, the handwritten Quran with gold, Bhagwat Geeta, Encyclopedia of all living creatures in a paper machie art were showcased.

Some history books on Kashmir written on cloth and 1870 dated book of Hakim Luqman which includes his 100 advises to his son were also showcased.

During the function, the deputy Director Libraries,  Shaheena said that the aim of celebrating the heritage week is to raise awareness about the heritage and to encourage its preservation, conservation and promotion.

“Such occasions serve a reminder that on the whole the society must get together to celebrate and preserve the spirit of heritage,” she said. “Every great culture and civilisation is known for its ability to showcase its heritage and work on its revival. It’s with that spirit that we are today celebrating the world heritage week.”
