GDC Sgr celebrates World Health Day with inauguration of Tobacco Cessation Clinic

Srinagar, Apr 07: The Government Dental College and Hospital, Srinagar Monday celebrated World Health Day 2025 with a series of health-awareness activities and initiatives aimed at promoting overall well-being and preventive healthcare.

In observance of World Health Day 2025, Government Dental College, Srinagar, organized a special event highlighting the importance of health and wellness, with a key focus on tobacco cessation. On this occasion, Prof. Dr.Ajaz Ahmad shah, Principal & Dean of the college, officially inaugurated a state-of-the-art Tobacco Cessation Clinic within the campus.

The newly established clinic aims to provide comprehensive support for individuals seeking to overcome tobacco addiction, including counseling services, medical assistance, and awareness programs. The initiative aligns with the World Health Organization’s ongoing mission to promote healthier lifestyles and combat tobacco use globally.

The Tobacco Cessation Counseling Cell inaugurated by Prof. (Dr) Ajaz Ahmad Shah, Principal of Government Dental College, Srinagar is run by department of Public Health Dentistry and Dr. Aasim Farooq Shah was nominated as Nodal officer for Tobacco cessation services. This inauguration ceremony was attended by all the faculty members students, and staff of GDC Srinagar

Speaking at the event, Prof. (Dr) Ajaz Ahmad Shah emphasized the critical role of health education and awareness in combating tobacco-related diseases. He stated, “On this World Health Day, we reiterate our commitment to safeguarding community health. The launch of this counseling cell is a vital move towards assisting individuals in overcoming tobacco addiction and leading healthier lives.”

Dr. Aasim Farooq Shah Head of the department Public Health Dentistry Department highlighted the public health implications of tobacco use and outlined the functions of the newly inaugurated cell, which will offer personalized counseling, support groups, and educational material to patients and visitors seeking to quit tobacco use.

The event featured insightful sessions by prominent speakers Dr. Bhuvnesh Goel from Faridkot and Dr. Asif Yousuf lecturer department of Public Health Dentistry,who addressed the critical health risks associated with tobacco consumption and emphasized the role of healthcare professionals in preventive care. The event also included awareness lectures focusing on this year’s World Health Day theme, “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures.”

The celebration witnessed enthusiastic participation from senior faculty members Professor Dr Altaf Chalkoo Head of department oral medicine and radiology, Professor Dr. Sandeep Kour Head of the department prosthodontics, Professor Dr Suhail Jan HOD Periodontics, Professor Dr Mohammad Mushtaq HOD Orthodontics, Professor Dr Shabir Shah medical superintendent, Professor Dr Amir Purra HOD Endodontics and Professor Dr Nazia lone HOD Pedodontics all the students and healthcare workers of institute reflecting a shared commitment to community health and wellness.

This initiative marks another milestone in Government Dental College Srinagar’s continued efforts to serve as a center of excellence in healthcare education and public health. Government Dental College and Hospital remains dedicated to promoting preventive healthcare and community outreach initiatives, aligning with global efforts to ensure health and well-being for all.
