JAMMU, JUNE 3: The Govt College for Women Parade must strive to acquire University status in the next two years under the guidelines unveiled by the National Education Policy 2020, This was announced by the Principal Secretary, Higher Education Department, Rohit Kansal today. He was at the college to inaugurate the updated state of the art music block in Government College for Women, Parade Ground, Jammu.

The updated block houses state of the art recording and editing studio, a spacious practice hall, a skill lab, a research centre and classrooms. The facility shall be used by the students and faculty of the college as well as the faculty of spoke colleges since the music department of GCW Parade Ground also serves as hub for research in music.

Speaking on the occasion, Kansal complimented the college management for establishment of an updated facility exclusively for music which will give new dimensions to the world of music here. He appreciated and highlighted contribution of prominent musicians of J&K in enriching the music of the nation and the world as well. He expressed his appreciation for the College being obe of three colleges in J&K with an autonomous status. He expressed the hope that the college would be a mentor for other colleges and would lead the way in teaching, research and skill enhancement. He mentioned that under the National Education Policy, multidisciplinary and flexibility were important components. Therefore the college should make sure that arts students were given opportunities to explore the sciences and science students got to study the liberal arts. He exhorted the staff to introduce the latest curriculum and to update their own skills. He also pitched fir bringing in more skill oriented courses and adding them to the regular curriculum to enhance employability of the passing graduates.

Earlier, Principal of the College, Dr. S P Sarswat, expressed gratitude to the higher education department in general and Rohit Kansal in particular for always supporting the institution in realizing the goals as mandated in NEP 2020. He explained the proposed action plan for the music department vis-à-vis research and academics.

Head of department of music, Dr. Anupama Sharma, presented a detailed overview of the course curriculum, skill courses and extension activities being undertaken by the department. She also briefed about the proposed research activities of the department that is serving as the research hub in music for Jammu division colleges. She hoped that with the availability of such advanced facilities we can expect tremendous outcome in the times to come.

The event was marked by mesmerizing display of musical talent by the young undergraduate and post graduate students of the college. An alumna of the college and a rising musical talent Sonali Dogra presented a soulful kafi while Vandana Jamwal presented a foot tapping dogri folk number. The classical music group presented Raag Yaman.

Special Secretary, Higher Education Department, Rakesh Badyal, senior faculty members of the college besides other senior officers were present on the occasion.
