Srinagar, Feb 19: An army soldier and a militant were killed in a gunfight in South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Saturday.

A senior police said that the militant as well as the soldier of army’s 1RR were killed in the gunfight in Chermarg area of the district. However the identity of the militant was yet to be ascertained. Reportedly one more soldier has died but official confirmation was awaited.

Earlier, a joint team of Police, army and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation on the input generated by JK Police in the area, officials said.

As the joint team of forces intensified searches towards the target spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, triggering off the gunfight.
