Srinagar, June 23: a gunfight has started between militants and government forces in Shirmal area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday.

“Encounter has started at Shirmal area of Shopian. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow,” police said in a statement.

Reports said that a joint team of Police, Army and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Shirmal.

As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, triggering off a gunfight.

A senior police officer confirmed about exchange of firing between militants and security forces.

As this report was being filed intermittent exchange of fire was going on.
