Srinagar, May 6: One among the four militants trapped in Kanigam area of southern Shopian district surrendered amid gunfight, police said on Thursday.
“One newly recruited (militant) namely Tausif Ahmad surrendered. Operation in progress. Further details shall follow,” police said in a tweet. Earlier a gunfight started in the area and as per police four newly recruited Al-Badr militants were believed to be trapped.
“Gunfight has started now as militants turned down the surrender offer and opened fire and lobbed grenade on joint search party,” police had said earlier.
It followed earlier statement on twitter that “four newly recruited local (militants) of Al-Badr outfit (are) trapped in Kanigam area of Shopian. Exercising maximum restraint, Police & security forces are trying their best to persuade them to surrender.”
A police officer earlier said that families of all the trapped militants were brought to the site in a bid to persuade them to surrender. “They opened fire which has been retaliated, leading to encounter,” he had said.
Last night, police, army’s 44 Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF had launched a cordoned and search operation in the area amid specific information about the presence of militants.
