Heavy Rains Lash Kashmir Sans Qazigund, Weatherman Fears Landslides Along Yatra Route

Srinagar: Heavy rains lashed many parts of Kashmir Valley since overnight even as weatherman on Saturday asked all concerned to remain alert for next few days against landslides and flash floods en route Amarnath yatra.
A meteorological department official said that Srinagar received 10.2 mm of rain till 8:30 a.m. while there was no rainfall in Qazigund, the gateway town of the Valley. Pahalgam and Kokernag received 6.3mm and 4.1mm rain while Kupwara in north Kashmir received highest rainfall in entire Valley with 27.2mm during the time. Gulmarg the world famous skiing resort received 7.4mm of rain.
Director Meteorological Department Sonam Lotus said that occasional light to moderate rain was most likely to occur at scattered places of state including on yatra routes— Phalagam, Cave shrine, Baltal-Cave. “There’s no forecast of any heavy shower. Due to intermittent rain since last few days, soil has become saturated, any additional rain may trigger landslide, flash flood especially in sloppy mountainous areas,” he said, adding, “All are requested to remain cautious for next few days,” he added.
