Water scarcity hits Pulwama’s Chewa Ullar Village, PHE blames orchardists

Basharat Rashid
Pulwama: residents of Chewa Ullar village in this south Kashmir district are facing difficulties due to the lack of potable water for last ‘ten’ days.
The aggrieved residents said that in absence of clean water, they have to fetch “contaminated” water from nearby streams or wells.
“We face many inconveniences here in absence of potable water. Concerned authorities have failed to resolve our issues which adds to our woes,” Aadil Ashraf Bhat, a local resident said.
A delegation of residents said that a tank was established in the village six years ago but that is “useless due to the reasons better known to the authorities.”
They said that despite several requests, the officials concerned failed to start tank and provide potable water till the date. The officials at the helm of the affairs have gone into a deep slumber, they alleged.
The residents appealed to the higher authorities to issue necessary directions to the officials to get the clean water supply in the area.
Meanwhile, an official of PHE, Chewa Ullar, said that orchardists in the village have illegally taken connections from main water supply due to which water crisis arose.
He said that rise in temperature has also role in it and that the department was trying its best to resolve the issue soon.
