The accident occurred at Chandeh village near Surinsar last night when the driver of the bus purportedly lost control over the bus (JK02BR-5503) which rolled down into the deep gorge, the officials said.

The driver had reportedly taken the interior route to dodge traffic police in view of the restrictions on the main Srinagar-Jammu highway which was opened for traffic from Jammu to Srinagar on Saturday after days of closure due to landslides at several places along the thoroughfare.

They said a rescue operation was immediately launched.

Five persons were found dead while 39 were rescued and rushed to Government Medical College hospital Jammu for treatment, the officials said. They said one of the injured was declared dead by doctors on arrival.
