Srinagar: The government is likely to extend winter vacations in schools for educational institutions of Kashmir division and winter zone of Jammu division till March 5.
Sources said that a formal order in this regard was expected soon. They said government has considered two factors in this regard—inclement weather and likelihood of protests by students in wake of the attacks on students in several parts of the India.
“A formal order as regards extension in vacations is expected very soon,” an official of the school education department said.
Sources said that director school education Kashmir on February 18 has written a letter to the secretary to government, school education department, in which he has sought extension in vacations due to the inclement weather conditions.
“In view of the prevailing weather conditions in Kashmir Valley particularly latest snowfall in far flung areas, it is recommended that the winter vacations may be extended upto 2nd of March. The schools shall reopen on march 5 as 3rd and 4th of March are gazetted holidays,” the letter adds.
As per order issued by the School Education Department in December last year, winter vacation for upto 8th standard would be observed till March 2, 2019 while for 9th standard onwards the vacation would be observed till February 23, 2019.
Moreover, the teaching faculty has been asked to report for duties in advance on February 22 to supervise the arrangements for reopening of the schools.
